We have now worked closely with QMS since 2003 and acted in a variety of roles. Our first was to ensure that all of Scotland’s abattoirs’ gained their PPC permits. These permit applications are not simple tasks, however, over a six month period we carried out a step-by-step training programme to ensure each one completed the process. Each abattoir also had a number of onsite visits to review progress and to explain what issues we were looking at on their site. The success of this project can be measured by the fact that all the abattoirs gained their permits without an issue. Following the success of this we were asked to repeat the process for the intensive pig sector. These are generally large operations managed by very few individuals with almost no spare time. For this reason the process was changed and each site was visited, specific data sought from farm and Ecodyn completing the applications for the sites. Again, all sites gained their permits without any issues. We have continued our relationship with QMS and many of the abattoirs and intensive pig units acting in a support role. This support has ranged from directing sites to available information to providing specific scientific support with regards to operations on site (e.g. composting).
